The 'X-Files' News: Plot Twist Shocks Annabeth Gish as She Finds Monica Colluding with Spender

If "X-Files" followers were thrown off guard about Agent Monica Reyes' collusion with Spender (William B. Davis), aka the Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM), it would be some comfort to know that Annabeth Gish herself, who plays the role of Reyes, was quite astonished when she found out that her character was the cigarette lighter for CSM. This amazing turnout of the plot was revealed during the "X-Files" revival finale episode on Feb. 22.

Gish could not reconcile herself to this fantastic twist of Monica Reyes colluding with Spender, revealing to TV Line that it "was a shock to me, as well, when I read the script." She says she had to speak of it to Chris Carter, the creator of the series, "mainly because I was like, 'Noooo, not Monica! No!'"

Gish points out how Reyes had been there to support Dana Scully in the time when they'd lost Fox Mulder. But Gish considers, "I think in the larger story, what she did was really still a testament to her friendship and loyalty to Scully." She continues, "And maybe perhaps in upcoming episodes, which it seems like we'll be doing, that will be revealed, as to why."

Apparently, the shock Gish received has been replaced with an insider's knowing the story will somehow work out. But this would mean a season 11, which has not been talked about as yet, although Gish has expressed an interest in taking part in another season of "X-Files."

She confirms her belief, "I think, as evidenced by the response, there is an audience for it, and when there's an audience, there's a sentiment for it."

She also expresses that it would be good to have Agent Reyes' old partner John Doggett (played by Robert Patrick) back on the show, too, saying, "It's not the same without everybody back."

As for the last episode closing with a cliff-hanger ending of Dr. Scully looking up in horror as a UFO beamed its light on her is another matter for Carter to explain to bewildered fans. Did it mean a season 11 is to follow?

Carter tells TV Line when asked if he was fine with the series ending that way, "I can tell you this: Fox owns this show. I can't imagine, with the ratings that we've got and the way we ended this season, that there won't be more X-Files. They will find a way to get that done. Because I spoke about it briefly with [Fox CEO] Dana Walden today, so there's an appetite there and... a chance certainly to find how we're gonna get ourselves off this precipice."

Some speculation has also been made as to when Fox could announce a pickup for season 11, which could be in May, what with negotiations needing to get underway with cast and producers for the show, not to mention that the main stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny both have heavy schedules.
