"Transformers 5" is set to hit theaters in summer 2017, and the film will start shooting in May this year. The fifth installment will follow the events of "Transformers: Age of Extinction," which was released in 2014.

Famous film director Michael Bay is coming back to direct the film. His confirmation came in a rather minor line in an interview with Rolling Stone. In addition to "13 Hours" and the next movie for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Bay is also working on a pre-production for the next "Transformers," the publication described.

"I'm doing Transformers ... 5, is it?" Bay said. "I've taken a lot of work."

Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg will also reprise his lead role in the film. The actor confirmed it with CinePop during the red carpet event for "Daddy's Home," his latest film. When the site asked him if he was ready to return to fight in the war between robots and humans. Without mincing any words, he answered "yes."

While the plot of the story has yet to be laid down in details, there are already snippets for audience to speculate on. For one, reports are saying that the storyline may undergo some major changes. For the past four installments, the Autobots had taken the backstage and the humans played the lead role, which is contrary to the case of the cartoon series in which the movie is adapted from. In the upcoming "Transformers," the robots may just be getting their rightful place: the centerstage.

"We will look at the toys, the TV shows, the merchandise, everything that has been generated by Hasbro, from popular to forgotten iterations, and establish a mythological timeline," Akiva Goldsman, head screenwriter of "Transformers 5," said in an interview with Deadline.

"It has been designed with a lot of visual help, toys, robots, sketches, and writers and artists. After that super saturation, the writers will figure out not one, but numerous films that will extend the universe."
