'Wayward Pines' season 2 spoilers: The plan to take down Wayward Pines leaders continues

"Wayward Pines" was initially planned as one-season series and fans were devastated at how such a beautifully crafted show would not live that long. Eventually, however, it was announced that the show was given another go, which is fitting, considering the positive response it had received.

The finale episode of season 1 saw the death of the series' protagonist, Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon). Now that Ethan's out of the picture, season 2 is expected to give focus to the First Generation, a group of youngsters who will now be heading the strange town of Wayward Pines.

Dillon's role as the lead will be filled in by Jason Patric, who will play the character Dr. Theo Yedlin. According to Deadline, Theo is a determined and confident surgeon who has exemplary leadership skills that should be of importance to the residents of the town.

He is a newcomer who just came back from suspended animation and discovers the chaotic state of Wayward Pines. Theo will try to understand what the odd town is about and will also do his best to stop the human race from going extinct.

Meanwhile, another character might just be the next Harold Ballinger, the toymaker portrayed by Reed Diamond back in season 1. Harold was one of the people who tried to take down the forces of Wayward Pines. He was killed by one of the members of The First Generation.

Now, Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road) steps in as a new character in the series, playing the role of Xander, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The confident character will use his charm to blend in with the rest of the residents, but he is really determined to weaken Wayward Pines from within.

Several new faces have already been reported to join the series, including Kacey Rohl and Nimrat Kaur. It remains to be seen if the survivors of the rebellion from season 1 will still be part of season 2.

A release date for "Wayward Pines" season 2 has yet to be announced.
