'Alien: Covenant' release date, news: Official trailer conjures up a scare; Katherine Waterston talks her character

(Facebook/alienanthology)The official trailer for "Alien: Covenant" conjures up a lot of scares.

20th Century Fox has released the official trailer of "Alien: Covenant," the upcoming sequel to "Prometheus" and prequel to the "Alien" franchise. Needless to say, the short clip manages to stir a lot of suspense and terror into anyone who views it.

Released on Christmas Day, the trailer starts out already on a high, with panic looming in the air. An empty hall wil bloodied footprints can be seen. Suddenly, a woman runs to a closed door and it is immediately clear that everyone inside will soon be alien chow. She refuses to open the door as the would-be victim pleads with her. She looks back and witnesses, in great horror, that an alien is bursting out of the back of a man.

The iconic scene of an alien bursting out of someone's chest is largely associated with Ridley Scott's "Alien" franchise. And it looks like the director is aiming for all parts of the body.

The following scenes show Michael Fassbender's David and the crew of the colony ship, Covenant. They land in a mysterious planet and try to look around. And in true "Alien" tradition, they discover a frightful creature, which attacks one of the crew members. The trailer features a lot of horrific scenes, as well as the take-charge lead character, Daniels.

Katherine Waterston, who most recently starred alongside Eddie Redmayne in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," plays Daniels, who is described as a born leader. In addition to the poster of Daniels released last week, Empire has also exclusively obtained a new photo of Waterston in action as Scott directs her.

"She's not the captain, but she's a natural leader so in times of crisis she falls into that position quite easily," Waterston told the media outlet of her character.

Fans are undoubtedly excited to see what sort of scary surprises the film has in store, but they will have to wait until May 19, 2017 to revel in terror.
