Assassin's Creed Unity release date: 900p graphics on PS4, Xbox One, 1080p on PC, Developer denies downgrade

Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity, the PC and console gameplay about societies at war during the French Revolution, will only be capable of 1080p display resolution for PCs while next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One are locked at 900p on release date. Ubisoft denies it is a graphics downgrade on any platform, however.

"Technically we're CPU-bound," senior producer Vincent Pontbriand told VideoGamer.com.

"The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it's the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel," he added.

Pontbriand also cited that the decision to lock Xbox One and PS4 at the same specs is for parity-sake and to avoid debates.

But this didn't sit well for PS4 fans who felt that they are not maximizing the full potential of the console just to achieve this "fairness".

"So... Ubisoft cripples Assassin's Creed: Unity for PS4 because XBone can't keep up? Huh? #PS4NoParity," a tweet reads.

Aside from the PS4 fans' rage, many people misconstrued these statements and concluded that Ubisoft "lowered" the specs of Assassin's Creed Unity.

To address this issue, the studio released a statement via Kotaku.

"We understand how Senior Producer Vincent Pontbriand's quotes have been misinterpreted," Ubisoft statement said.

The statement continued, "To set the record straight, we did not lower the specs for Assassin's Creed Unity to account for any one system over the other."

It further explained, "Assassin's Creed Unity has been engineered from the ground up for next-generation consoles. Over the past 4 years, we have created Assassin's Creed Unity to attain the tremendous level of quality we have now achieved on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. It's a process of building up toward our goals, not scaling down, and we're proud to say that we have reached those goals on all SKUs."

Meanwhile, Associate Level Design Director Christophe Rossignol hinted that the Co-op gameplay is an authentic open arena where "everything is open, you can navigate everywhere."

The Assassin's Creed Unity release date is scheduled for commercial launch on Nov. 11 for Xbox One and PS4.
