'Castle' season 9 renewed or cancelled? Stana Katic and Tamala Jones will not return

"Castle" season 9 is still up in the air, as ABC is yet to announce whether the show will return for a ninth season or not. While the future of the series is still undetermined, the fates of stars Stana Katic and Tamala Jones are already known.
Deadline reported that two of "Castle's" original stars won't be coming back in the event the series is picked up for a ninth season.
The news was undoubtedly shocking for die-hard "Castle" fans. Despite the show being named after Nathan Fillion's character, Richard Castle, there was no question that Katic's NYPD Detective Kate Beckett was as central to the series as her male counterpart.
It has been reported that the network's decision to let Katic and Jones go were prompted by budget cuts. However, there are also rumors that Katic is unhappy with the show and has been clashing with her co-star Fillion.
Letting go of Katic and Jones is said to be part of a reboot that producers hope will revive the flagging series and help get it picked up for another, rumored shorter, season.
ABC gave no comments about the alleged reboot or the show's renewal chances; instead, the network acknowledged in a statement Kate Beckett's importance in the 8 seasons the show has ran.
"We are grateful for Stana Katic's talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship," the statement read. "Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of Castle."
Jones played Lanie Parish, a smart and sassy medical examiner and who was also Beckett's confidante.
Despite the speculations surrounding this shocking turn of events, Katic opted not to comment on it and focused instead on the positive. She told the press that "rather than distract from what was an amazing experience," she wanted to thank ABC and the fans for the opportunity to work on the show.
As expected, fans were blindsided by the news and have taken to social media to vent. "Castle" creator and former showrunner Andrew W. Marlowe also chimed in and tweeted that he was "heartbroken."
Heartbroken. There are no words. #nmc

His co-executive producer and writer Terri Edda Miller agreed with the sentiment.

Now fans are wondering how the producers and writers will write off Katic's character. Showrunner Terence Paul Winter told TV Line that the finale for season 8 will see that Rick and Kate taking on LokSat "puts their case, and their lives, in jeopardy."
Winter, along with his fellow producer Alexi Hawley, revealed that they shot two endings for the finale, one that can be used to usher in a new season and another that will end the series properly. Now the question is what version the network will choose to show.
