'Criminal Minds' season 11 midseason finale: unit on the hunt for UnSub fascinated with the medical world; series set to return in January

After introducing fans to another UnSub that's so deranged he will forever be remembered in "Criminal Minds" history in episode nine, the show will be going on a much deserved winter break. But as expected from the long running police procedural, the midseason finale of "Criminal Minds" season 11 will be one for the books.

The "Carter Matt" site posted the upcoming episode's very brief synopsis, which simply stated that "the BAU searches for an UnSub who may be fascinated with medical experimentation."

The trailer for episode 10, titled "Future Perfect," doesn't reveal much either, although it does set the stage for what promises to be another disturbing episode. The clip starts with a shot of a woman being wheeled into a hospital operating room. Her eyes flutter open, indicating that she's slowly coming out of her stupor. The next scene gives viewers the impression that she's being prepped for a medical procedure; the patient is seen being secured, there are bags of IV and medical equipment. The first hint that things aren't what they seem is revealed as a man is shown picking a scalpel, and he's not wearing medical scrubs!

The woman is awake by now and viewers see that she's gagged. She looks around frantically and sees a man on another gurney, lying beside her; he's also tied up. The clip ends with a shot of the man and woman side by side.

Whatever the UnSub has in store for them is undoubtedly painful and wrong. But "Criminal Minds" has already had several episodes of UnSubs performing totally unnecessary and uncalled for experiments or medical procedures that fans are wondering how this will be different. Will this criminal be as memorable as Charles Holcombe, the "house cleaner" who set out to torture and kill 63 vagrants, junkies and prostitutes? Or will he be as twisted as Mason Turner, the quadriplegic who made his autistic brother conduct experiments on the homeless in a bid to find a cure for his paralysis?

The midseason finale of "Criminal Minds" season 11 is set to air on Dec. 9. The series will take a short break and will be back in January.
