'Narcos' season 3 air date and spoilers: Series to focus on the Cali Cartel next; show to return in 2017

(Facebook/Narcos)Netflix has renewed "Narcos" for two more seasons.

Pablo Escobar might have met his demise in the sophomore season of "Narcos," but the show is far from over.

"Narcos" fans know that Pablo Escobar would be meeting his death in season 2, even before the series started streaming on Netflix. After all, the drug lord's rise and demise are well-documented and renowned. Unfortunately, his end also meant that fans had to say goodbye to Wagner Moura, who channeled the infamous criminal perfectly.

Fans might have bid adieu to Moura, but they don't have to say goodbye to the show as "Narcos" has been picked up for two more seasons by Netflix. The streaming giant revealed its decision to renew the series via a 30-second clip that began with a shot of Escobar's face and ending with a glimpse of his successor. The line "The blow must go on" teases at what's ahead for the popular show.

While nothing's certain yet as far as next season's storyline goes, season 2's finale hinted that the show might touch on the Cali Cartel. "Narcos" showrunner Eric Newman admitted to EW that the series was indeed set up for that, adding that the "show has always been about cocaine."

"We purposely did not call the show 'Pablo Escobar' or 'Medellin,'" Newman explained. "In the same way that Osama Bin Laden begets ISIS, Medellin begets Cali begets the Mexican Cartels."

With Escobar dead, DEA Agent Peña (Pedro Pascal) returned to the United States. But he was invited back by the group for a new operation, raising viewers' hopes that they would also see the return of Pascal. But with the show based on real-life events, Newman was understandably wary about committing to the idea.

"We try to be as bound to what actually happened as we can — within reason, obviously," the showrunner said. "We do take some liberties for dramatic purposes, but I'd probably have to look at what Peña's role would be in the Cali, in taking down Cali."

"Narcos" season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix, while season 3 is slated to be aired sometime in 2017.
