The landscape of the NBA's Western Conference may change drastically this summer and it may be due to the San Antonio Spurs landing the marquee name of the upcoming free agent class.

The marquee name belongs to none other than Kevin Durant, and with his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder set to expire at the end of the year, many teams will undoubtedly be lining up to sign the former NBA MVP.

In an article posted by Chris Mannix of The Vertical, he revealed that executives of other NBA teams have already expressed their belief that the Spurs will eventually try to figure out a way to add Durant to the roster.

Such a signing could turn the Spurs into the NBA's most formidable squad, and they aren't exactly doing too badly right now.

The Spurs currently only trail the Golden State Warriors in the standings, and with a significant chunk of the regular season left to go and the playoffs to follow, the team still has a shot of surpassing the reigning champions.

With the Spurs already a perennial powerhouse, it would not be too shocking to see Durant sign with them if he truly does want to put himself in prime position to routinely compete for the NBA title.

With that in mind, moving to San Antonio certainly makes sense for Durant, though it could even be more helpful for the Spurs.

Signing Durant could help dramatically change the perception of the San Antonio Spurs.

While long hailed as one of the NBA's model franchises, the team still hasn't exactly established itself as a go-to destination for free agents, but that began to change last year after they managed to sign LaMarcus Aldridge away from the Portland Trailblazers, while fending off advances from other teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns in the process.

Should the Spurs manage to sign Durant this summer, that would be the second year in a row in which they managed to land arguably the best free agent available.

Managing to land Durant may not just turn the San Antonio Spurs into the NBA's best team, it may also help transform them into a desired destination for the free agents of the future.
