'The Strain' season 4 news: FX renews series for a fourth and final season; horror drama to air last season in 2017

Fans of "The Strain" would soon be saying goodbye to their favorite show as FX confirmed that the series would end in season 4. Meanwhile, can Justine and her army drive the strigoi out of Manhattan?
FX announced this week that it has renewed "The Strain" for a fourth and final season. In a statement, the network's Presidents of Original Programming, Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, thanked Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan, and the show's cast and creative team "for three exciting seasons of 'The Strain.'"
"Though we're sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season's dramatic conclusion," the statement reads.
While the news saddened fans, it wasn't exactly a shock as showrunner Cuse had been very vocal about their plan for a three-season series and had previously admitted that he, along with del Toro and Hogan, felt that they can wrap their story in season 4.
"We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic season four," Cuse said. "We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable."
An intense and exciting series finale is easy to envision, considering everything that has been going on in season 3. In the upcoming sixth episode, Fet (Kevin Durand) will be striking hard at the heart of the strigoi army, while Justine (Samantha Mathis) embarks on a dangerous mission that might finally drive the vampires out of Manhattan for good. Meanwhile, Gus (Miguel Gomez) and Angel (Joaquin Cosio) fight for their lives and their freedom but are confronted with a moral dilemma.
The trailer for episode 6, "The Battle of Central Park," teases an uphill battle for the remaining humans as the councilwoman and her team attempt to strike at the strigoi in the evening. The large number of the creatures that have swarmed the park doesn't bode well for the humans.
A new episode of "The Strain" will be aired on FX on Oct. 2 at 10 p.m.
