'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 trailer: Heretics about to take over Mystic Falls; things get heated between 'Steroline'

The CW has finally released the official trailer for "The Vampire Diaries'" seventh season and it appears the Salvatore brothers and the rest of their friends won't have the luxury of time to miss Elena.

The truncated trailer is full of intense scenes, particularly those that show next season's reported villains, the Heretics, and their leader, Lily Salvatore.

Paul Wesley, who plays one of the Salvatore brothers, had previously teased that the Heretics would be doing some "pretty horrible" things to his beloved town. The short clip gives fans a glimpse of some of those things, like people being attacked in public, being tortured and buildings being burned down. Amid the warzone are some snippets of Salvatore family drama, which elevates dysfunctional to another level.

Ian Somerhalder's Damon is seen being at his snarkiest best, calling their mother, Lily (Annie Wersching), a "lunatic" while Wesley's Stefan reveals a deal that he had made with her.

"We don't mess with them, they don't mess with us," Stefan tells his brother.

However, it would seem that Stefan's lady love, Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola-King), isn't completely onboard the idea of just giving Mystic Falls over to "a bunch of supernatural terrorists." A don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it scene appears to show Caroline being tortured by the Heretics. Maybe that will be what pushes Stefan to fight back as he's seen asking someone how to make a bomb towards the end of the clip, hopefully to blow up his mother or her followers.

Stefan and Caroline's love story is reportedly significant in season seven of "The Vampire Diaries." The trailer hints at that as well as a one-second long shot shows a steamy scene playing out between the two. Fans are no doubt hoping this means "Steroline's" love story will progress further. But whether it will progress to the point that they will have a baby remains to be seen as there's still no news on whether Accola-King's pregnancy will be written in the show.

As for Damon, Somerhalder had teased that his character will be going back to his bad boy ways as he grieves losing Elena (Nina Dobrev). But how he'll handle his grief is something that fans would have to see for themselves.

Season seven of "The Vampire Diaries" is set to return on Oct. 8, 2015.
