There is only one episode left of "Wayward Pines" before the series — not just the season — ends.

Talks have been rampant that Fox would be serving up another season of "Wayward Pines" but the network has officially buried that idea when it confirmed that the next episode is officially the series' finale.

"Wayward Pines" revolves around Secret Service Agent, Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon), and his attempts to get himself and his family out of the rustic town of "Wayward Pines." However, all that changed when he discovered the truth about the town, its inhabitants and the abbeys (aberrations) who are trying to get inside the town.

Everything will be coming to a head in the next episode after Pilcher (Toby Jones) turned off the town's electricity, making everyone vulnerable to the abbeys who can now get past the no-longer electrified fence. The last episode, intriguingly titled "Cycle," finds Ethan and Kate (Carla Gugino) planning the defense of the town while the First Generation take matters into their own hands in a bid to protect the town's future.

The series, which is based on Blake Crouch's "Wayward Pines" novels, is actually one of Fox's highest rating shows this summer season, with 3.79 million viewers tuning in every week. The strong ratings had network executives mulling over renewing the show for another season, maybe with a different group of characters inhabiting the same post-apocalyptic world. But Fox is sticking to its guns.

"The series was always conceived and presented as 10 episodes only," was the very definitive answer of a Fox rep.

The end of "Wayward Pines" is not really a surprise for most fans as executive producer M. Night Shyamalan mentioned that this event is just a one-off. However, he hinted that he is amenable to a second season and rattled out the conditions for it; and they were pretty steep conditions.

According to the "After Earth" director, the only way they would be doing a second season was "if the opportunity is there." He emphasized that they "won't do it unless it's organically and creatively correct."

Fans should prepare to say goodbye to "Wayward Pines" when it airs its final episode on July 23, 2015.
