Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 release date: name changed from Redmi Note 2 Pro day before launch

Xiaomi has just unveiled the latest iteration in the Redmi Note series, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. Interestingly, reports have suggested that before the official unveiling of the handset on Nov. 24, it was called by another name. 

According to a report from GSM Arena, the Chinese company announced on Nov. 23, a day before the event, that the new smartphone is called Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 —  which was previously referred to as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro. 

As for specs, the most recent post on the official Xiaomi forum details the official specifications of the Redmi Note 3. The newly launched handset sports a 5.5-inch screen with 1080p display quality. In terms of CPU power, it runs on a MediaTek Helio X10 processor. 

On the RAM and internal memory aspect, the company has revealed that it comes in two different variants: one with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory; and another, the high priced one, with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB storage capacity. 

Furthermore, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is equipped with a 13MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing snapper as well as a 4 000 mAh battery. 

In terms of features, the new handset comes with a fingerprint sensor on its back, pretty much standard for above mid-range to high-range smartphones today. Aside from the sensor, the official post has also revealed that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3's casing is made of a full aluminum unibody. 

The lower-priced 2 GB/16 GB variant of the Redmi Note 3 is currently priced at RMB 899 (which is roughly around $141) while the 3 GB/32 GB version, is priced at RMB 1099 (or roughly $172 when converted).
