Spencer Reid's (Matthew Gray Gubler) fate is on the line in the next episode of "Criminal Minds" season 12.

Based on the trailer for the episode aptly titled "Spencer," fans can expect to see the extremely intelligent BAU special agent behind bars in Mexico. According to Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez), Reid is being charged with murder. But Reid is having problems recalling the events that led to his supposed crime.

The synopsis for the episode also reveals that the BAU will do everything to help Reid in his case. They will even ask the help of the International Response Team from the spin-off series "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" to prove his innocence.

The trailer also hints that Reid could have been drugged and used as a scapegoat by the real killer.

In the upcoming episode, "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" character Clara Seger (Alana De La Garza) and Matthew Simmons (Daniel Henney) will join the BAU agents in a trip to Mexico to help investigate Reid's murder case.

Other guest stars include David Barrera as Mario Castaneda, Pancho Cardenas as Reid's cellmate in Mexico, David Carreno as Officer Cabrera, Ani Sava as Rosa Medina, as well as Kevin Palafox as one of the technicians.

Because of the episode's title, fans are worried that it could be Gubler's swan song in the long-running police procedural series. But co-executive producer Harry Bring assures the show's fans on Twitter that it will not be the case, and they should not worry about the actor's rumored exit from the show.

If the rumors about Gubler's exit will turn out to be true, he will join Thomas Gibson in departing the long-running action-packed series in season 12. But Gibson was forced to leave his role as Aaron Hotchner on the show due to his involvement in a physical altercation with one of the show's producers when filming the first episodes of the current season.

CBS will air the next episode of "Criminal Minds" season 12 on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 9 p.m.
