Steven Spielberg's science fiction post-apocalyptic series, "Falling Skies," is headed for its final season, which will pick up right from where season four had left, with Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) lost in space.

Following the announcement of season five, TNT has released a synopsis of the upcoming season, which stated: "As season five opens, all breed of beast and mutant are running rampant on earth. The Espheni's power core has been destroyed, and humans are now ready to fight on their terms, even if it means resorting to hand-to-hand combat against the enemy. After four years of being tortured, imprisoned and mutated and having their loved ones stolen from them, Tom and the 2nd Mass are filled with rage, ready to destroy the enemy in an all-out battle to determine the fate of Earth."

Actor Drew Roy, who plays Hal Mason in the show, revealed in an interview with Airun Garky, that though the situation looked hopeless for Tom at the end of season four, he is likely to eventually return to Earth. "But how he gets back is the mystery," said Roy.

The series has seen a number of showrunners during its five seasons that led to a couple of reinventions in writing, according to an article by TVLine. The first season was led by Mark Verheiden ("Heroes" and "Battlestar Galactica"), season two and three by Remi Aubuchon (Caprica), and for the fourth and fifth seasons, "Battlestar Galactica" vet David Eick holds the position of series showrunner. However, lead actor Noah Wyle, who is also a producer for the show, believes that the farewell will be "a satisfying one."

According to Christian Today, the upcoming final season will be directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, following the departure of long-time series director Greg Beeman. Another addition to the show will be Catalina Sandino Moreno who is set to play Isabella, an academic militant prior to the invasion, but introduces herself as a nurse to gain trust.

The final season of "Falling Skies" premieres on June 28 on TNT.
