The Indiana Pacers took a big chance on Ty Lawson, someone who has not been playing up to par so far this season.

He was seen as a savior to the Houston Rockets woes at the point guard position but, unfortunately, it didn't turn out to be a good fit. Could the case be different with the Pacers?

President Larry Bird is upbeat that Lawson can improve the team's chances in the National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs and Lawson will play a crucial role. His playmaking and speed are expected to pay dividends, particularly for the second unit.

If his first game against the San Antonio Spurs is any indication, it seems like he does look comfortable. His speed was there and he can dish to the open guys from the wing. Unfortunately, he suffered an immediate injury not long after, landing on Spurs (and former Pacer) big man David West.

The injury doesn't seem to be that serious, although it is expected to hamper his quickness. Nevertheless, Lawson is a tough cookie and should be able to play through the pain.

Lawson is expected to take over from rookie Joe Young. The former's NBA experience of makes Bird pretty confident of his team's chances in the playoffs. The Pacers currently hold a 34–30 win–loss record, which is good for seventh spot.

With about 18 games to go, the Pacers could improve on that and make the top four with a string of wins. All that started with their win over the Spurs, 99–91.

The Pacers can grab their third straight win on March 13 when they visit a dangerous Dallas Mavericks quintet.

The break should be good news for Lawson, who needs all the rest he can get to allow his ankle to heal.

Bird is, obviously, hoping that Lawson gets back on track and recall the magic he once weaved with the Denver Nuggets. So far he has been showing some glimpses of it and hopefully, it doesn't suddenly fade.
