Minnesota Timberwolves trade rumors 2016: Ricky Rubio to Cleveland Cavaliers for Iman Shumpert?

The Cleveland Cavaliers are believed to be needing a point guard, and now that Iman Shumpert is dealing with some off-court issues, they might use him as a trade piece to acquire one. A player at the no. 1 position who is being linked to the reigning champions this off-season is the Minnesota Timberwolves' Ricky Rubio.

Currently, the Cavs have three point guards in Kyrie Irving, who is expected to start, and his backups, the veteran Mo Williams and rookie Kay Felder.

That may seem enough, until reports spread that Williams is planning to hang up his jersey for good before the 2016-17 National Basketball Association (NBA) season. When that occurs, Cleveland will lack depth at the no. 1 position and this could be a major problem moving forward.

Because of this, a few playmakers were connected to the Cavs and Rubio was among them. The Spanish star was dragged to the rumor mill after the Wolves selected Kris Dunn, fifth overall, in this year's draft.

Dunn is also a point guard and some thought he was replacing Rubio on Minnesota's roster.

If Rubio gets dealt, the Wolves will still have Dunn and Tyus Jones at point guard. Both are young but with great potential and the franchise could live with that since it boasts a budding group of talented players.

It is uncertain if Minnesota would want Shumpert for Rubio, although the recently troubled shooting guard may give the organization depth at the no. 2 position as he joins Zach LaVine and Brandon Rush.

If an exchange happens, the Wolves will get more than just Shumpert. Because the Cavaliers are again way past salary cap limits, one more guy might also be shipped to Minnesota for Rubio.

The Wolves have not expressed interest in parting ways with Rubio though, and for now, they may want to keep him instead of adding Shumpert, whose recent troubles might interfere in the great development the youngsters of Minnesota are having.
