Motorola, which is now part of Lenovo, released the Moto 360 2 this year to a lot of praise from reviewers and users alike. Along with the device came another version the Moto 360 Sport and it is scheduled to land in the market in January of next year.

The announcement about the arrival of the Moto 360 Sport came in an official blog post from Motorola that stated that the device would have a price tag of $299. Forbes reporting on the smartwatch states, that it will be a unique offering among other sport and fitness focused devices because it has inbuilt GPS. It added that it would be the second such Android Wear device, and the only other offering was the Sony SmartWatch 3.

Even the Apple Watch which has sold millions of units and is one of the most popular smartwatches of the year, does not have GPS onboard and has to be paired along with a smartphone when tracking runners.

Importantly GPS onboard the Moto 360 Sport will allow users to wear the watch when running and they do not have to carry along their paired smartphone to track their progress. However, there is no SIM card onboard the device so users will still have to use the paired smartphone to receive calls. Also it is likely that if GPS is always kept on, the battery on the device will run down quickly and will not be able to last through an entire day.

On the Moto 360 Sport, there is also a heart rate sensor and barometric altimeter which can track the height covered by the user in case they are climbing stairs as part of their fitness routine.

The release of the Moto 360 Sport is going to happen in Europe this year, specifically on Dec. 18 but people who want to buy the device in the United States will have to wait a while longer as it will only release on Jan. 7. 2016.
