'Narcos' season 3 cast, plot news: Boyd Holbrook will no longer reprise his role as Steve Murphy

Actor Boyd Holbrook, who played Steve Murphy in the last season of "Narcos," confirmed that he will no longer be part of the third season that is rumored to return to Netflix between August and September this year. Season 3 will reportedly follow Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) as he hunts down Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman after successfully securing the downfall of Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) in season 2.
In a recent press event for the movie "Logan," Holbrook spoke very briefly about "Narcos" season 3 saying, "It's shooting right now actually, but not with me. I'm not in it."
As fans may recall, Holbrook portrayed a lead character in season 2 as Murphy was the lead police officer hunting down Escobar. He was also the narrator in that particular season. Since Escobar's drug operation has finally been curbed, it would make no sense for Murphy to reappear in season 3 as the story is designed to take a different slant.
Meanwhile, it was reported that season 3 will feature a new character, El Chapo, who will lead the production of cocaine in Mexican territory. Furthermore, fans will see the rise of the Cali Cartel in the upcoming season following the death of billionaire drug kingpin Escobar.
The Cali Cartel is also a known drug cartel in Colombia comprised of Jose "Chepe" Santacruz Londonio and brothers Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela. Several reports mentioned that the Cali Cartel was formed after Helmer "Pacho" Herrera left the wing of the late Escobar and joined Londonio and the Orejuela brothers.
Coming on board to join the members of the cast in season 3 is Miguel Angel Silvestre who will portray the role of a Cali Cartel money launderer. Other confirmed cast members for season 3 include Nicholas Gonzalez, Arturo Castro, Andrea Londo, Michael Stahl-David, Kerry Bishé, and Matt Whelan.
Netflix has yet to announce the official release date of "Narcos" season 3.
