Samsung Galaxy S8 release date set for December 2016 or early 2017; to ditch headphone jack?

(Samsung)Follow-up to the Galaxy S7 (shown), the Galaxy S8, is expected to arrive early next year.

In light of the recent Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall, leaks for the upcoming Samsung flagship Galaxy S8 have been circulating online. Rumor has it that the upcoming handset may be released sooner than expected.

Leaks on upcoming releases by huge tech companies are usually being frowned on by the PR team. But because of the wide coverage of the Galaxy Note 7's battery problems, the recent leaks for Samsung Galaxy S8 may be a good thing to steer away the attention of gadget enthusiasts from the pending problem.

According to reports, the Galaxy S8 will be getting a lot of changes in design and specs. The upcoming smartphone will most likely get Note 7 and the Galaxy Edge's two-curved-edge design and the tech giant may no longer release a flat screen alternative for this series. If this turns out to be true, then the Edge line may be discontinued.

The next Samsung Galaxy 8 is also rumored to come in two sizes and they are code-named "Dream" and "Dream 2" with possible model numbers SM-G950 and SM-G955.

With Apple's iPhone 7 no longer sporting a headphone jack, it is also possible that Samsung will ditch the 3.55-mm jack to free up space and design their own port that could be licensed to other Android makers at a lower price. It is also possible that Samsung will ditch the jack and replace it with the trendy yet more universal USB Type-C ports.

As for the release of the Samsung Galaxy S8, there are reports that it was initially planned to be launched on their usual Galaxy launch dates — sometime in February or March. However, rumor has it that Samsung may release it earlier than their usual launch dates to remedy the Galaxy Note 7 problems. If the tech giant even wants to take a bigger damage control, a December 2016 launch could even be bolder.

More details on the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be announced soon.
