The Salvatore brothers might be out of the Phoenix Stone but it seems the effects are more pervasive than expected.

The midseason premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 showed Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) personal hell, courtesy of being trapped in the Phoenix Stone. He was eventually freed by Bonnie (Kat Graham) only to go full-on psycho on her, Stefan (Paul Wesley), Matt (Zach Roerig) and Caroline (Candice Accola- King).

Even with Damon and Stefan free from the Stone, they're apparently not totally free of its effects. A synopsis for episode 11, "Things We Lost in the Fire," hints at Stefan trying to help his brother as he still experiences the trauma of being trapped in the mystical stone. Unfortunately, it seems that Stefan is also struggling in the aftermath of his entrapment. Their friends Bonnie and Matt are also struggling with Julian's (Todd Lasance) take-over of Mystic Falls, causing Matt to get into trouble with Officer Penny (Ana Nogueira).

A trailer for the upcoming episode hints at Stefan's own hell and what the brothers have to deal with. The short clip starts with a shot of Damon chained. Stefan tells him that while hell messes you, being out of it messes one more. Damon assures his brother that he's fine but when he looks up, he sees a wounded man looking down at him. Caroline senses that something's wrong with her erstwhile boyfriend and talks to him, pointing out that something happened to him inside the Stone that he won't admit to. Meanwhile, Damon is seen shouting at a man in a coffin, telling him to haunt someone else. The sneak peek ends with Stefan revealed to Caroline that he had to let Damon go in the Phoenix Stone since he wanted to survive. He's shown looking down at his brother while Damon slowly sinks under water.

The brothers won't be the only ones dealing with the pains of the past. The synopsis also hinted at Caroline's ex-boyfriend arriving in town to ostensibly help Alaric (Matt Davis) as he gets ready for the babies' arrival. However, Caroline will reportedly make an upsetting discovery about what exactly Alaric has planned for his babies.

There's no hint as to what this plan is, but Caroline's reaction ensures that it must not be good.

Episode 11 of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will air on Feb. 5.
