The public will soon have their first glimpse of Mac OS X 10.10, the operating system that will run on new Mac computers. Changes to the operating system are not divulged so far, but industry pundits expect a design revamp, given that iOS 7 received big redesign changes and OS X 10.9 Mavericks previously had visual changes.

Together with iOS 8, OS X 10.10 is expected to take center stage at Apple's WWDC 2014 today.

Design

Design-wise, OS X 10.10 is expected to have aesthetic looks like that of iOS 7's more defined icons and flatter design. Rumors said its window corners will be sharper and will show more white space to look tidier.

OS X 10.10 may likely also have Siri and a Control Center. It is believed Apple will release an OS X 10.10 beta for developers following its announcement.

Name

While Apple code names for OS X 10.10 have it as "Syrah," it will not be given its official name until launch, most likely another California landmark. It all started last year, with Mavericks as the name of OS X 10.9, which is a famous surfing spot in California.

Based on the banners currently gracing Moscone Center, where the WWDC 2014 is held, it looks like the name will be OS X El Cap or OS X Yosemite, which does not conflict with Apple's trademark filings on California-themed labels including Big Sur, California, Condor, Diablo, El Cap, Farallon, Grizzly, Mammoth, Miramar, Monterey, Pacific, Redtail, Redwood, Rincon, Sierra, Shasta, Skyline, Tiburon and Yosemite.

Release Date

The new Mac OS will likely be released to the public in the fall of 2014, along with iOS 8. Apple is said to have allocated UI resources from iOS to the OS X team, so that the latter can get a revamp and be ready for today's WWDC 2014, and be unveiled to the public for the first time.
