'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 is all about the Salvatore brothers; official trailer reveals that the Heretics are taking over Mystic Falls

In less than a month, fans of "The Vampire Diaries" will finally be able to see how their favorite supernatural characters will be moving on from the loss of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), after she was hit with an unbreakable spell.
"To fill the void of a main character, it just means seeing people we already know very well a little bit more. This season, the guts of of the show is really the Salvatore brothers... The show feels like its still 'Vampire Diaries,' but there's this level of maturity to it now," showrunner, Caroline Dries, said.
When season seven returns in October, things will be a little grim in Mystic Falls. Aside from the loss of Elena, the town is also dealing with the death of Sheriff Forbes and Jo; and the exits of Jeremy and Tyler. While the first episode may be a dark and heavy episode, Dries intends to transition the rest of the season to show more fun and less dark episodes.
Executive producer, Julie Plec, also revealed that when season seven returns, there will be two different timelines. One timeline is set very much into the future. On the other hand, the other timeline will resume right after the events of season six.
CW has recently released the official season seven trailer that shows that the Heretics, led by Salvatore matriarch, Lily, taking over Mystic Falls. The Heretics, a group of vampire-witch hybrids, have been revealed to be the main antagonists this season. Episode three has been revealed to be a flashback story, showing the backstory of how the Heretics came to be.
With the arrival of Lily Salvatore, Damon and Stefan will have very conflicted feelings toward their mother. "They have mixed feelings towards her, they have resentment, they love her, because they used to love her and she raised them... There's just a million of emotions," Dries added.
It seems that even without the presence of main character, Elena, there's enough drama and action to fuel the upcoming season.
Season seven of "The Vampire Diaries" premieres on Oct. 8, Thursday, at 8 p.m. on the CW.
