'Empire' Season 2 premiere date set for September 23; Timbaland, Ne-Yo working on music for the show; will Zac Efron join show?
"Empire" fans, rejoice! We have confirmation on the debut of Season 2 and it will be on September 23 at 9PM ET/PT. Both Taraji P. Henson and the "Empire" writing team took to Twitter to confirm the news.
After a tremendous Season 1 wrapped up two months ago, there were questions as to whether "Empire" would air its second season within 2015 or wait until early 2016 to do so. It seems that FOX is banking on striking while the iron is hot, thus the fall premiere. It looks like half of the planned 18 episodes will be aired in 2015, with the other half reserved for 2016.
When the series aired its first season, it grew in viewership week after week, finishing as the season's number 1 broadcast entertainment series in the 18-49 age bracket. Not since the 2007-08 season with ABC's "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy" did the same kind of numbers occurred.
"Empire" is a drama about the Lyons family dynasty, set within a world of music, glamor, danger and power. The team behind it consists of Lee Daniels ("The Butler", "Precious"), Danny Strong ("Game Change", "The Butler") and Brian Grazer ("A Beautiful Mind", "24"). Featured music is by Timbaland.
The series stars Terence Howard ("Crash, Hustle & Flow") and Taraji P. Henson ("No Good Deed", "The Curious Base of Benjamin Button"). They are supported by Malik Yoba, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, Kaitlin Doubleday, Bryshere Gray and Grace Gealey.
Guest stars from the first season were Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious"), Courtney Love ("The People vs. Larry Flint"), Derek Luke ("The Americans") and Judd Nelson ("The Breakfast Club"). Other musical guests were Gladys Knight and Snoop Dogg.
For Season 2, it has been announced that Chris Rock, Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz will be guesting in the show. There are unconfirmed reports that Zac Efron will join the cast as Lucius' fourth son.
So, on September 23, the Lyons will be coming back to the small screen, bringing along all their drama and intrigue, but aside from the story and characters, there is one more thing a lot of people will be waiting with bated breath for. The new music! Along with Timbaland, Ne-Yo has been added as the show's songwriter and is reportedly writing all the new songs for the show.
