Microsoft's Xbox Project Scorpio is being positioned to be a lot better than Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro as the former will support 4K resolution. It has now become one of the most sought after and highly anticipated releases for 2017.

Xbox Project Scorpio is reportedly capable of running video games at 4K resolution, something that the PlayStation 4 Pro is unable to do according to reports. This feature of the upcoming gaming console just might propel it ahead of its greatest rival in the market.

Sony and Microsoft have been in a fierce competition over the years when it comes to their respective consoles.

Evidently, Microsoft believes that the birth of Project Scorpio will pave the way for next generation consoles and will signal the end of traditional consoles produced by the company.

"We think the future is without console generations," said Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox games marketing in an Engadget interview. "We think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware – we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. "We're basically saying, 'This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices."

Prior to the announcement of the Xbox Project Scorpio, Microsoft released an update version of the Xbox One known as the Xbox One S. Its closest competitor, Sony, subsequently released the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Pro.

The PlayStation 4 Slim created quite a stir among gaming enthusiasts because of its lightweight design and its more affordable price compared to the Xbox One S. The Slim version is priced lower than $300.

The Project Scorpio console is going to be released in the holiday season of 2017. Microsoft's previous launches took place around November so it is highly likely that eager players can get their hands on the new gadget by then.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, announced on his Twitter account last August that the upcoming console already started production.
