2016 MINI Clubman: sub-compact station wagon is spacious and attractive

The MINI Clubman first appeared in last year's Geneva Motor Show as a concept car. Just recently, the BMW-owned MINI finally unveiled it as the 2016 Mini Clubman during the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show. The second-generation sub-compact wagon follows the original Clubman, released back in 2008.
MINI, known for their compact cars, has unveiled their largest model yet. The six-door Clubman has a length of 167 inches and uses a 105-inch wheelbase. It is also 12.4 inches longer and 4.6 inches wider than the first-generation Clubman.
The 2016 Clubman is coming to the U.S. early next year and is expected to be the company's flagship vehicle in the country.
The compact station wagon will come with either a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that gives 134 horsepower and 162lb-ft of torque or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gives 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The standard model comes with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic version. There is also an optional eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The standard model can go from 0 to 60 mph in 9 seconds, while the Cooper S model can do it in 7 seconds.
The MINI station wagon also uses BMW's UKL1 platform, which can also be seen in the latest Mini Hatch, the BMW 2-Series Active and Gran Tourers.
The 2016 Clubman's front fascia still maintains the classic MINI look found in the standard Cooper models. However, unlike previous MINI models, the 2016 Clubman features four traditional side doors with twin-barn doors located at the rear. The rear has folding seats, which can also give way to additional storage space.
The interiors have also been given a complete overhaul. Cabin space is roomier and the interior's upholstery appears plush. At the center of the dashboard, there is 6.5-inch round infotainment system screen, which can be upgraded to 8.8 inches.
The interior also features electric parking brake, electric seating adjustment, ambient lighting, and a heads up display to provide driving assistance.
MINI's vehicle offerings have always been attractive and intriguing. Now, with the 2016 Clubman offering more space and upgraded interiors, it seems that MINI is heading into the right direction, as it gains a wider customer base.
The 2016 Clubman, expected to arrive early next year and will cost about $26,800.
